In the ‘About Me’ post I wrote about the word count tracker I started in October 2009. Initially, its main purpose was simple: it was supposed to help me follow the progress of the manuscript and, yes, keep track of the word count. My target was to reach approximately 100,000 words by October 2010, which I planned to be the final word count for my finished novel. Of course, that didn’t happen. I reached the 100,000 mark much later, discovering on the way the first real lesson of the writing process: first draft word count is not the true length of the story. It’s not supposed to be. In the end, I seriously overshot the runway, almost doubling the initial word count, and giving myself a serious headache editing it. But about that, well ... I’ll tell you another time. more
